Curatorial Talks: Sarah Gavlak and Terry R. Myers

Join Terry R. Myers in conversation with Sarah Gavlak, founder of the eponymous Gavlak Gallery, which showcases female and LGTBQ artists. Gavlak is also founder of New Wave Art Wknd, which hosts an annual residency program for emerging artists from marginalized communities. Myers and Gavlak will discuss the process of creating the New Wave Art Wknd initiative, and cultivating patronage and creativity in Gavlak’s community. After the talk, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and comment on the discussion.

In 2005, Sarah Gavlak opened the first contemporary art gallery in Palm Beach, recognizing a lack of local gallery presence. Her eponymous gallery champions female and LGTBQ artists, staging highly conceptual and pioneering exhibitions, including early solo presentations by Wade Guyton, Simone Leigh, Marilyn Minter, and Betty Tompkins. Gavlak expanded her footprint in 2014, opening a new space in Hollywood. She recently took on representation for artists Candida Alvarez, Gisela Colon, Beverly Fishman, and Vanessa German.

Los Angeles-based writer and independent curator Terry R. Myers is an editor-at-large of the Brooklyn Rail. His most recent curatorial project was the survey exhibition, Candida Alvarez: Here, at the Chicago Cultural Center. Myers has held faculty positions at institutions including Art Center College of Design, Otis College of Art and Design, Pratt Institute, the Royal College of Art, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was chair of painting and drawing.
