Phillip Estlund "Modern Nature"

Gavlak Palm Beach

December 6, 2006 – January 5, 2007

Made from discarded reference books, field guides, trade catalogues and a variety of salvaged detritus from demolished buildings, this series of collages examines material erosion and environmental decay. Combining familiar images of our natural and constructed world with a variety of distressed and corrosive surfaces, I am exploring fluctuating conditions of our ever-changing world. Now common realizations of global inhabitation stir concerns over natural disasters, depleted natural resources and human responsibility, producing an equally common anxiety. The result of the combination of these materials and images are fantastical, ominous landscapes that are at once seductive and often unsettling.
