GAVLAK is pleased to present Between Worlds, a group exhibition bringing together artists whose works occupy spaces of transition: between the material and spiritual, earthly and celestial, familiar and otherworldly. Across painting, photography, textiles, collage, sculpture, and glass, the exhibition explores how materials can become thresholds—carrying viewers from what is immediately visible toward more elusive states of memory, desire, transformation, and transcendence.
The exhibition features work by Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A.), Lisa Anne Auerbach, Andrew Brischler, Jessica Cannon, Renée Condo, Field Kallop, Kris Knight, Nancy Lorenz, Marilyn Minter, Maynard Monrow, Pae White, T.J. Wilcox, and Rob Wynne. Across the presentation, seductive surfaces reveal more complex narratives: feathers, gold leaf, mirrored bronze, woven fibers, glass beads, and photographic imagery become vehicles for exploring identity, desire, memory, migration, nature, and transformation.
Works on view locate this sense of transition within states of illumination and suspension. Field Kallop’s geometric abstraction conjures a celestial order through gold and silver leaf, while Jessica Cannon’s expansive celestial composition dissolves the boundaries between landscape, atmosphere, and light. Elsewhere, Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A.) layers feathers, mica, and drawing into spiritually charged portraits, and Rob Wynne’s mirrored glass transforms language into an object that reflects both its surroundings and the viewer. Together, the works suggest that another world may not exist beyond our own, but within the materials, bodies, and images that already surround us.
Moving between the intimate and the monumental, Between Worlds considers art as a portal between states of being. Rather than presenting the physical and metaphysical as opposites, the exhibition reveals how they continually overlap—inviting us to look beyond the surface and encounter the extraordinary within the material world.
